Kalimpong is a small hill station in the state of West bengal. Situated at an altitude of 1,250 mt. (4,101 ft.), the town is the headquarters of Kalimpong district. Kalimpong used to be the gateway of trade between Tibet and India prior to China’s annexation of Tibet, through the Silk route. The town is perched on a ridge overlooking the Teesta river and is a tourist destination owing to its temperate climate, magnificent view of the Himalayan range and proximity to neighbouring Sikkim, Darjeeling, Lava, and other small hamlets popular as tourist destinations. Kalimpong is also famous for its horticulture. A wide variety of orchids and cactus are grown in local nurseries, which are being exported all over the world.
Kalimpong is about 80 kms form the nearest airport of Bagdogra by road, through NH 31A. The nearest railway station New Jalpaiguri station is 73 kms away.
Kalimpong is the home to Nepalis, non-indigenous Lepchas, other ethnic groups and non native immigrants of other parts of India. The town is a religious centre of Buddhism.

SIGHT SEEING OF KALIMPONG
For a tourist Kalimpong is a place just to relax and enjoy the serene beauty of the mountains and take a stroll in the local market exploring the fashionable winter garments available, local pickles, etc.
But there are also few good places to visit during the daytime which are mentioned below:
DELO: Situated at an altitude of 1,704 m (5,591 ft.), Delo is the highest point of Kalimpong. The river Teesta flows in the valley below separating it from the state of Sikkim. There is a tourist lodge situated at the top of the hill, maintained by the Gorkhaland Territorial Adminstration. But the beautiful landscape around it with its lovely seasonal flowers are worth seeing.
Dr. GRAHAM’S SCHOOL: This missionary school was set up by Dr. J A Graham in 1900 as an orphanage cum school for the destitute Anglo Indian children. It started only with one cottage that accommodated up to 35 children. Over the years it has grown as a well known multi religious and co-educational school spanning over 500 acres of lush landscape and having some 50 cottages. It is located on the way to Deolo Hills. You can walk across to various parts of the school.
LORD BUDDHA STATUE: Close to Deolo there is a small rock garden in which you will find this nice statue of Lord Buddha sitting in a lotus position. This is only a quick stop over point and a good place to click a picture.
DURGA TEMPLE: This is a Hindu temple of Goddess Durga located near Sherpa View Point. A nice garden full of flowering plants and a viewing gallery. The temple is small but quite nice. Good place to relax for a while.
HANUMAN TEMPLE: Right after Durga Mandir is a huge statue of Lord Hanuman perched on the hill. Climb several flights of stairs to reach up to the temple.
MANGAL DHAM: An excellent temple complex built in the memory of late Guruji Mangal Dasji and dedicated to Lord Krishna. Devotees come from far away places.
THARBU CHOELING MONASTERY: This is the oldest monsatery in Kalimpong which was built in 1692. It's also known as the Bhutan Monastery and located close to Mangal Dham.
ARMY GOLF COURSE: A scenic 9-hole golf course which was conceived and laid by the army authorities. You can see the golf course from the roadside Watershed View Point. From here you also get splendid views of the mountains as well as Loleygaon. It's located close to the Circuit House.
MORGAN HOUSE: This used to be an old British property and reflect a typical colonial architecture with sprawling garden and views of Kanchenjunga. It has been converted into a hotel and now run by West Bengal Tourism Department. You can enter the premises and walk around, but can not go upstairs in the building where most rooms are located. Morgan House is located opposite to the Army Golf Course.
DURPIN MONASTERY: This Tibetan monastery is located on the Durpin hill and hence such name. The actual name is Zang Dog Palri monastery. It was built in 1972 and has some rare Buddhist scripts that were brought here by Dalai Lama from Tibet. From the upper terrace of the monastery, you get magnificent views of Kalimpong town with Kanchenjunga in the background, the valley and the plains, Teesta & Reang rivers flowing down, and lovely tea estates of Peshoke area.
PRATIMA TAGORE HOUSE: This house with nice garden and lovely views was built by Pratima Tagore in 1943, daughter-in-law of the poet Rabindranath Tagore. You will find original furnishing, lot of memorabilia and poet's verses in this house. It is located on Atisha road close to the Pine View Nursery.
PINE VIEW NURSERY: Pine view nursery has a great collection of around 1500 different variety of cactus and ornamental plants. Mr. Mohan S Pradhan the individual behind this project and nursery left his orchid business and followed his passion for cactus. He got an opportunity to collect various species of cactus during his business trips to different parts of the world. Soon he started to raise them in his greenhouse which he built at his home. Entry fee: Rs. 10/- per person.
KALI MANDIR: A Temple of goddess Kali. Climb a stairway from the roadside to reach up to the temple. From the terrace, you get wonderful view of Kalimpong town and the mountain range.
St. TERESA CATHOLIC CHURCH: Built by local craftsmen the church resembles a Bhutanese Gompa(monastery) and it is built in Tibetan architectural design. While the walls are enriched with paintings and inscriptions from the Bible the doors of the church have carvings which resemble tashi tagye (the 8 auspicious symbols of the Himalayan Buddhism).
MACFARLANE MEMORIAL CHURCH: Macfarlane Memorial Church was established in 1891 in memory of Rev. William Macfarlane, the first missionary who came to Kalimpong. One of Kalimpong's most imposing churches, this church was severely damaged by a 2011 earthquake, when one of its steeples came crashing to the ground. After renovations, the church is now open to visitors and believers alike, and its wood-buttressed Gothic interiors are a wonderful place to spend a few moments in quiet contemplation.
PLACES OF INTEREST AROUND KALIMPONG
LAVA: Lava is a small hamlet situated 34 kilometres (21 m) east of the town of Kalimpong near Algarah in Kalimpong district of the state of West Bengal, India. Lava is situated at an altitude of 7,016 feet (2,138 m). It is the entry point to the Neora Valley National Park from Kalimpong. The route to Lava is scenic with the change in vegetation from tropical deciduous to the wet alpine trees of fir, pine and birch. The verdant forests are a popular spot for picnic, trekking and bird-watching. Lava has gradually become a favorite tourist destination.
Wild animals such as the Himalayan black bear and barking deer are found in these parts. A Buddhist monastery is present on one of the hills of Lava. Notable sites include Changey Waterfalls and Lava Jamgyong Kongtrul Monastery.
LOLEYGAON: Lolegaon, also spelt as Loleygaon or Lolaegaon, is a scenically blessed Lepcha hamlet in Kalimpong District. Undisturbed by the tourist rush Lolegaon is snugly tucked on the further end of Himalayan Ridge. Blessed with temperate weather Lolegaon is an ideal destination to beat the scorching heat of summer season. Surrounded by thick wooded forest of pine and conifer trees, Lolegaon has become a place to find solitude amidst nature. At an altitude of 1675mt Lolegaon is famous for offering the most exquisite view of snow capped Mt Kanchenjunga.Drive to Loleygaon (2.5hours), take a canopy walk amongst tree tops on a thrilling tree-top hanging bridge made in lush jungle, then drive to Lava (1hour), visit the Lava monastery and drive back in the evening via Algarah.
RISHYAP: Rishyap is a small village and hill station in the Kalimpong district of the state of West Bengal, India. Rishyap is also spelt as Rishop. Rishyap was developed as a tourist destination recently in 1998. There are many myths and legends associated with the name Rishyap - Ri stands for mountain peak (some say it is lofty) and shop means age-old trees in Tibetan. Rishyap is situated at an altitude of 2591 m. (8,500 ft.).
PEDONG: Pedong lies 20 km east of Kalimpong on the way to Lava at an altitude of 1,240 metres (4.071 feet). The town, which is located on a ridge, commands a panoramic view of the Mt. kanchanjunga and the Himalayan mountains. The town is divided into two parts, Upper Pedong and Lower Pedong. Pedong lies on the historic Silk Route that connects india to Lhasa via the jelepla Pass. Take a short drive of about half an hour and see the ruins of Damsang Fort of 1690. Then visit Pedong, its heritage sites and some of the lovely view points around, and drive back to Kalimpong in the evening.
